Ghost brownies are an easy Halloween dessert, featuring boxed brownie mix, vanilla frosting, and ghost-faced marshmallows. They are a boo-licious and festive holiday treat!
I love surprising my kids with fun and creative Halloween treats, and these boo-licious ghost brownies were definitely a hit!
They’re semi-homemade, using boxed brownie mix and a few special ingredients to make them fit for the holiday.
Everyone will love this sweet, marshmallowy treat!
This recipe works because it’s:
- Great for a crowd. You can take this dish to a Halloween party or use it for a family night dessert.
- Quick and easy. All you’ll need is your favorite boxed brownie mix and a few extra ingredients.
- Sure to be the favorite treat! We hosted a Halloween dessert night and these brownies were the first ones gone.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Make your favorite boxed brownie mix in a 9×9 pan according to the directions, but replace the oil with melted butter.
Let the brownies cool, then cut them into nine squares and place them on a baking rack.
Heat 4 ounces of vanilla frosting in the microwave for 10 seconds. Stir well and add a small spoonful of vanilla frosting to the center of each brownie.
Use the black writing gel to draw a face on each of the nine marshmallows, tall side up.
Start with two small dots for the eyes, and then draw a larger oval shape, underneath, for the mouth.
Once each marshmallow has a ghost face, place one marshmallow on the center of each brownie and gently press to set them into the frosting.
Let the frosting harden, then serve.
Recipe Tips and Substitutions
If you’re not a fan of boxed brownies, you can make your favorite homemade recipe. Or, you can go the easier route and just buy un-frosted brownies from your favorite bakery!
The frosting will be pretty runny when you take it out of the microwave, so do it carefully.
You can choose how “drippy” you want the brownies to look. I didn’t let the frosting run down the sides of the brownies, but if you’d like have them look a little more spooky, you can spoon more frosting on.
Make sure to use a high quality black writing gel so the ghosts faces don’t run!
Try these ghost decorations on top of chocolate cupcakes or even mini brownie bites!

FAQs
If you can’t find the black writing gel, you can use an edible ink marker or some melted chocolate chips that you squeeze on with a piping bag.
